When my twin boys were born, I was very excited to read to them.
They had received a lot of neat books as gifts, and I was looking
forward to sharing their books with them.

What I wasn’t expecting was them not focusing on a book for more
than a second or two so I could read to them! Reading to babies
can be challenging when there are so many things in the world to
explore, but here are some tips that have worked for me.

There are many different types of books available for babies.
Board books and cloth books work best for babies so they can
handle them and drool on them without doing much damage to them.

If your baby isn’t interested in one type of book, keep
introducing different books until you find one he is interested
in. One of my sons loves books with pictures of real babies in
them. He loves to look at their smiling faces. For Christmas he
received a board book called “Tom Arma’s Paw Print Parade”. Tom
Arma (a famous baby photographer) has a new line of baby board
books available at http://www.amazon.com. My son has another
board book called “Happy Baby Words” from
http://www.priddybooks.com. This book pictures babies getting
dressed, eating, etc. He loves to look at the pictures in that
book.

Tip! Stuffed animals ? Every baby needs a few, but be careful that everyone else didn’t give a stuffed animal as well. There is only so much room in the nursery.

My other son loves cloth books. Sesame Street has a book called
“Get Dressed with Elmo” that is his favorite. This book is

interactive book where a toddler can zip zippers, fasten buttons,
attach velcro, etc. A baby can’t do these activities, of course,
but my son loves to flip the soft pages and play with the items
in the book.

Tip! Involve the family. Encourage older siblings, your partner, grandparents and other people that care for your baby.

My boys are 10 1/2 months old, and I find that they will look at
books by themselves longer than they will let me read to them. I
make sure to have books in every room of the house that they find
when they are crawling around, and they will stop and look at
them (of course they are finding my books too!). They especially
like looking at books in bed. When they are going to sleep they
will lie in their beds and roll around with their favorite book
in their hands. I’ve peeked in their room to find one of them
sitting in his bed turning the pages of his favorite Elmo book.
If I were to try to read it to him he would instantly try to
crawl away.

I figure just exposing my boys to books at this age will
influence their desire to want to read, even if they don’t feel
like indulging my desire to read to them. I have found one time
they will let me read to them, however…when I plop them in bed!
Right when the tears are about to start I pull out their favorite
book and read it to them in their crib. One son stands holding
on to the edge of his crib (hoping I’ll change my mind and pick
him back up) while I read his book to him. I have a captive
audience and they are distracted from their initial reaction to
being put in bed. After I read their stories they generally let
me leave without a fuss!

Having the first baby born on New Years Day is harder than it might seem. After all, as with most competitions, there are plenty of other people in the running. And you certainly do not want to let a rookie win!

Wait a minute – why is this a competition that you should strive to win? What are the prizes that you get for having the first baby born on New Years Day?

1.  Alright. Let us just say that the most important prize that you can get, win or lose, is a brand new baby! That is right. Everyone who ‘enters’ this competition gets a consolation prize!

2.  Many local businesses donate prizes like baby blankets, baby formula, diapers, and baby store gift certificates. Sure, all of these items are specifically for the baby more so than directly for you but babies can be expensive, so you still save.

3.  Money. Well, money is not the most likely gift, but we can always cross our fingers and hope, right?

All right, now that we have covered the possible prizes that you could receive simply by being the first to have your baby on New Years Day, let us get straight to the training. Well, you likely already know the general idea about how to ‘train’ for this event, but let us help you with the specifics.

1.  Decide if it is more important to win big or to simply win. If you want to win big, then you need to move to a big city. If you simply want to win, living in a smaller town will increase your chances.

7.  Stop smoking! No, this warning is not just for the mothers, it is for the fathers, as well. There are many problems associated with smoking during pregnancy. For one, smoking can increase the risk of stillbirth and miscarriage in women. It can also decrease sperm count in men, lessening the chances of conceiving in the first place.

8.  Oh, and while you are at it, stop drinking alcohol and taking recreational drugs!

9.  Be healthy. Exercise. Eat well.

10. Too much caffeine can increase the chance of a miscarriage.

Alright, let us get straight to the almighty conception. How can you conceive at the right time?

1.  Do the math. If you want to have your baby on New Years Day, you are going to have to get pregnant about 9 months before that.

2.  Check your family histories and see if there are any patterns as to how long family pregnancies lasted. If your family tends to have babies early, then you can get started a little late, etc.

Tip! You and your family might want to pick baby names in honor of favorite relatives or ancestors, or special names that show your family’s ethnic roots. You may even want to borrow a name from one of your favorite celebrities or sports athelete.

3.  Reduce your stress. If you are stressed out, tired, and not relaxed, you are going to be less likely to conceive.

4.  Use an ovulation predictor kit to find out when you are most susceptible to getting pregnant.

5.  Learn how to track your cycle. There are certain tricks to the trade: take your temperature, pay attention to your discharge levels, etc. You should start tracking your basal body temperature ahead of the time of your ideal conception date. This will help you predict when your ovulation occurs. This is because your temperature increases by .5 degrees as soon as the egg is released.

6.  After you have sex, it is recommended by some for the women to place her hips up on a pillow for nearly 30 minutes to give the sperm a chance to swim upstream.

Tip! Stuffed animals ? Every baby needs a few, but be careful that everyone else didn’t give a stuffed animal as well. There is only so much room in the nursery.

Babies should be in rearward-facing baby seats until they weigh at least 13kgs and can sit up unaided, only then should they be placed in a forward facing seat. Try to keep them in a rearward-facing seat as long as possible as it’s the safest way.

As many as 80% of car seats are installed incorrectly, and the most common errors are not tightening the seatbelt and harness enough. Make sure your child is safe and properly strapped in and never place a car seat where there is an active airbag. Always read and follow the manufacturer’s instructions when fitting the seat

Tip! Let Go of Timeouts ? Timeouts can work for some children (but there are far better techniques). Ultimately, the only person we can control is ourselves.

It is far better to buy a new child seat; second hand car seats have suffered more wear and tear and may not be designed to current safety standards. If you must buy second hand make sure it’s either from family or friend so you know the car seat history, and that it comes with the full instruction manual for fitting.

Prices vary dramatically, and it is not necessarily best to buy the most expensive one. The most important thing is to make sure that the seat you choose is suitable for your child and for your car. There are a number of price comparison websites to help you.

Look through the manufacturer’s catalogues, on their websites, and in shops so you can see a broad range of seats, there are lots to choose from. If you will be constantly taking it in and out of the car, then a lightweight seat may be the best choice, and if you do a lot of travelling it will probably be better to get a car seat that reclines so your child will be more comfortable and can fall to sleep on those long journeys. Before you buy a car seat you should contact the child seat manufacturer to check if the seat will fit your car.
