How To Choose The Right Baby Monitor For Your Infant Or Baby

Tip! Put your baby in a swing and gently rock it back and fourth.

Baby Monitors usually come in two units a Parent/Unit and a Baby/Unit. The Baby unit is the transmitter that goes in the nursery near your baby to pick up any sound he makes and then send them to the receiver Parent Unit which is usually placed in a room with yourself. Many baby monitors have clips that allow you to attach the receiver to your belt or clothing.

Tip! Breastfeed your baby, if possible. It*s free, it*s convenient, and it might help against breast cancer.

There are some visual monitors that are usually more expensive as they come with a camera built in to the Baby Unit and pick up images of the baby and transmit them to a small screen in the parent’s room. However most commonly are the ones that pick up sound only. The more expensive the monitor the more features you will get with it. For instance; Temperature monitors check the baby’s room temperature and will warn you if the room gets too hot or too cold. Respiration monitors which check babies breathing. Some have Child alarms that will warn you if your child is wandering off. They can also play soft lullaby tunes to help your baby drift off to sleep.

Tip! Search for exotic and unique baby names online. There are many baby websites with listings and resources for baby names.

Baby monitors are either mains or battery operated. Mains operated monitors are very simple and the cheapest, but you must be positioned near a plug both in the nursery and in the parent’s room. The battery operated monitors are portable so can be positioned anywhere, some of them come with rechargeable batteries which can also save on the expense. Decide on a one-way or two-way system. A one-way monitor allows you to hear your child, while a two-way monitor allows your child to hear you as well.

Tip! Give the baby a warm bath.

Respiration monitors sound an alarm if breathing or movement is not detected and may be useful if you are particularly worried. Respiration monitors also use pads placed under the baby’s mattress, which can detect movement and breathing.

Tip! Try burping the baby.

Baby monitors let you know your baby is safe at all times. Monitors include all kinds of plug-in, digital, walkabout and rechargeable units; they are all designed to ensure parents have a peaceful night. Baby monitors have come a long way with technology and now come with digital and video features.

One of the main uses of baby monitors is when the child is asleep in a separate room; do take the size of your home into account. Some baby monitors have more of a limited range than others, and have trouble transmitting through thick concrete walls. Larger homes on more than one level may require something more sophisticated. In a small home, a simple monitor should be sufficient.

Tip! Shop at specialty boutiques. There are so many wonderful baby and children’s boutiques featuring very unusual gifts.

A baby monitor can help you get things done around the house while your baby sleeps in another room. If you live in a small house or flat and can hear your baby wherever you are then you probably don’t need one, however, if your baby is upstairs and you are downstairs then it really is peace of mind.

How Parents Can Win the Battle To Keep Your Child Safe From Strangers This Holiday Season

Tip! The TV is off. We all know our children watch too much TV and we are all the more likely to let them watch when we are focused on sometask.

When we think of Holiday shopping, we think of all the glowing lights at our area malls and the various eye-catching decorations in shopping centers. Along with distractions with our ‘to do’ list in our heads, we get preoccupied with carrying bags and scoping out gifts. But with all the whirlwinds of diversions, we cannot put our guard down with who is scoping out our own children.

To help with this here are the top 7 things parents can do to prevent their young from falling prey to strangers and child kidnappers in the busy hustle and bustle of the season.

1. Stay connected. Make sure you have your children with you whether in a stroller or holding your hand. Even if your child stays next to you other times of the year, all the distractions of toys, decorations, and Santa can make any kid get sidetracked. For older children invest in a family walkie-talkie set. Make sure they know how to use it and check in with them on regular time intervals to know where they are – even if they are right next to you.

Tip! It teaches life skills. My child can prepare his own breakfast, load the dishes into the dishwasher, and then clear the table and floor when he is done.

2. If your child is lost go right to security. Most malls and shopping centers have security protocol when a child is missing. Don’t try to look for your child alone. Let them help you the second you realize you cannot find your child – every moment counts.

3. Know what your child is wearing that day, and carry a recent picture with you in your wallet. Most moms and dads have lots of pictures of the kids, but baby pics are not helpful if your child is lost and security needs to search for them.

4. Teach your child what to do if a stranger approaches them. First – Run away! Second – Tell somebody!

5. Role play with your child ahead of time. Use tactics that some kidnappers have used in the past and teach your children not to ‘fall for a stranger’s sneaky tricks!’ i.e. stranger favorite lures: candy, video games, comic books, toys, telling them “your mommy told me to bring you home” etc.

Tip! The more your child hears sounds, the better he/she will process these sounds into words. When a child is preschool/kindergarten age the listening word starts to become the written word.

6. Do not have your child wear anything with their name on it – i.e. back packs, purses, and jackets. Child offenders with pick up these clues and use the child’s name when speaking with them to gain trust.

7. Practice, Practice, Practice! Reviewing these strategies not only will help your child remember, but keep it on your mind as well. We all want our children safe, happy and well for more holidays to come.

How And Why To Child-Proof Your Home

Tip! Observe your child: That’s right. Just back off and actually watch them.

Is your child reaching the age were you are starting to worry about everything he or she might get into? You have all the reason in the world to worry about this because there are more hidden dangers in your house, for your child, than you could ever imagine. Therefore, before your child is even able to move around on its own it would be smart to start securing your home.

Why should you have to child-proof your house, you will teach your child not to get into things? This is a statement you might come to regret dearly if you do not take certain precautions to keep your baby safe. You may think there is nothing to worry about in your house but you will very soon realize what a child can get into and how many dangerous things you actually do have in your home.

Tip! When your children have proved themselves to handling their pennies, take them to open their own bank accounts.

You all want what is best for your children and would not want any harm to come to them, right? Well, that is why you need to secure your house, top to bottom. If you haven’t seen it in your own home yet, you have probably seen it on TV, where the kid pulls out all the drawers to get up on the kitchen counter. This actually does happen.

There are so much that needs to be mentioned when it comes to what you need to be aware of in your house like; where do you keep your cleaning supplies, can your child possible get to where you keep all your knives and such, what about electrical outlets, can they get to your stove? All of these, plus many more, are all important questions you need to ask yourself as you are looking around to see what needs to be done.

Tip! You’ll need to find out the type of situations that make your child shy. Some children are shy only when they are in a group.

It is actually quite amazing how fast a little child can be when it comes to getting into stuff like sticking something into a light socket or getting their hands stuck in a door or a drawer. Another good thing to have around the house are gates, the ones you put in the doorway to prevent your child from entering or leaving a room. These alone can help you out a lot but still you need to make sure they are safe in the room they are in.

To have baby monitors placed in each room can also be a very good idea and even though you can’t see your child you will at least be able to hear them to a certain degree. No amount of safety precaution is enough when it comes to your baby but if a person really knew all the hidden dangers in their house they would be amazed and probably quite terrified of what could happen.

Tip! The TV is off. We all know our children watch too much TV and we are all the more likely to let them watch when we are focused on sometask.

Start child proofing your house already today if your child is approaching that age because as you go you are bound to find plenty of things that needs to be done in order for your house to be safe for the little one.

How to Choose the Right Car Seat for your Infant, Baby or Child

Tip! Be Positive, Warm, and Supportive. The focus of all communication between you and your child should be on teaching.

The first thing to remember is to choose your new car seat by weight of the child and not by age. Some manufacturers give a guide range of age but it is only a guide as each child is different.

A car seat that is installed correctly can reduce the risk of serious injury or death by as much as 75%. Babies should be in rearward-facing baby seats until they weigh at least 13kgs and can sit up unaided, only then should they be placed in a forward facing seat. Try to keep them in a rearward-facing seat as long as possible as it’s the safest way.

As many as 80% of car seats are installed incorrectly, and the most common errors are not tightening the seatbelt and harness enough. Make sure your child is safe and properly strapped in and never place a car seat where there is an active airbag. Always read and follow the manufacturer’s instructions when fitting the seat

Tip! Let Go of Timeouts ? Timeouts can work for some children (but there are far better techniques). Ultimately, the only person we can control is ourselves.

It is far better to buy a new child seat; second hand car seats have suffered more wear and tear and may not be designed to current safety standards. If you must buy second hand make sure it’s either from family or friend so you know the car seat history, and that it comes with the full instruction manual for fitting.

Prices vary dramatically, and it is not necessarily best to buy the most expensive one. The most important thing is to make sure that the seat you choose is suitable for your child and for your car. There are a number of price comparison websites to help you.

Look through the manufacturer’s catalogues, on their websites, and in shops so you can see a broad range of seats, there are lots to choose from. If you will be constantly taking it in and out of the car, then a lightweight seat may be the best choice, and if you do a lot of travelling it will probably be better to get a car seat that reclines so your child will be more comfortable and can fall to sleep on those long journeys. Before you buy a car seat you should contact the child seat manufacturer to check if the seat will fit your car.

Tip! Balloons: More children have suffocated on uninflated balloons and pieces of balloons than any other type of toy. Balloon related deaths are more common among children ages three and older than among younger children.

The best car seat you can buy is the one that will fit your car and your baby!

Mark Hartshorne is a father with two young children and created a website to review baby car seats to offer parents a fair comparison on price, size, safety, design and more. That website is My Baby Car Seat.

How to Choose the Best Highchair for your Baby or Child

Tip! Buy a piggy bank for your younger children. Allow them to choose whatever color shape or size they desire.

There is a wide range of baby highchairs available to purchase and there are many varieties and styles to choose from. However there are several factors to consider when looking at them. Before buying, make sure the chair has a good wide base for stability to help reduce the risk of it tipping over.

Check that there’s a good secure harness or seat strap to keep your baby firmly attached in the high chair. There should be a sturdy, but comfortable, strap that attaches to the waist belt and then passes through baby’s legs, so they don’t slide down under the feeding tray. If possible look for one that has a fixed 5-point harness, as that will be the safest. Many babies and children are actually injured when the baby has not been correctly restrained, and baby has fallen out.

Tip! Prepare your child for the commonsense consequence?Give your children fair warning, but only once. Respectfully tell them what you have decided to do, but don’t remind them every five minutes.

Always check that your highchair will be functional; is it hardwearing, is it easy to clean (very important) as there will be many spills to come, is the tray removable for washing as you need to make sure it cleans easily and thoroughly for hygiene and safety, but make sure your child cannot remove the tray on their own!

Make sure the highchair you buy will store easily – do you have the space? And will it fold down easily. Folding highchairs usually fold flat which is great if you’re short on space but make sure the tray isn’t fixed as it’s more difficult to keep clean and you may also not be able to pull the highchair up to your table at mealtimes.

Tip! Take your child’s ideas seriously. By lessening the importance of a child’s concerns you lessen the child.

You can buy an adjustable highchair, which usually comes with a padded seat and can be raised and lowered; they also fold for easy storage.

There is also the option of a 3-in-1 highchair which can be used as a highchair and then when your child is a little older can be converted to a low chair and table. There are some very attractive looking highchairs on the market, which you can co-ordinate to match your kitchen decor, however make sure the fabric is washable. You’ll be using the highchair for a long time so shop around and get the right one that suits you and you’ll have many happy mealtimes together round the table as baby joins the family for dinner.

Tip! It teaches life skills. My child can prepare his own breakfast, load the dishes into the dishwasher, and then clear the table and floor when he is done.

How To Cope As Divorced Parents

Parenting is one of the toughest jobs that we will undertake in our life time. Our children are exposed to so many things that makes it very difficult to keep track of what our children are doing and thinking. This task is even more difficult for divorced parents.

When children live in more than one household it takes good communications to keep up with what they are doing.  Divorced parents need to be aware of what the children are allowed to do and access in each other’s homes.

This can be accomplished through direct communication.  A huge mistake that many divorced parents make is trying to communicate through the children. This is wrong for several reasons. The main reason is that it places the children in the middle. It also pressures a child to be able to deliver a message word for word, which studies have shown most adults cannot do.

Another reason why trying to communication through the children is ineffective is that it allows room for the child to manipulate the messages, which can result in misdirected anger.  Most people do not like the role of playing messenger between two people.  The messenger is often in the position of being exposed to the person’s reaction to the message.

Divorced parents forget that most time the children want to be left out of the emotional baggage that may exist between them. The children need to feel that they are permitted to love both of their parents. Having to hear responses about messages they are delivering may make this difficult.

If divorced parents are able to agree to put their differences aside when they are dealing with parenting issues, things can run much smoother. If the children know that their divorced parents are openly communicating about the activities of the children, they will feel more secure. This will also greatly decrease the ability of the children to manipulate their divorced parents.

Studies have shown that children crave having a set routine. It is comforting for them to know what is in store for them, especially during the school year, when they are also faced with learning and peer issues. Through good communications children can have this routine, even if their time is divided between two households.

Due to the high rate of divorce there are services and support systems in most communities for divorced parents. These services include support groups as well as counseling and literature.

Some communities also include support groups for the children of divorced families. Most of these services are available free of charge or for a very minimal fee. Having a support group gives the parents a place to vent without putting their children in the middle.

How To Protect Your Kids From Adult Animation

When people think of animation, they usually think of children. However, many cartoons and drawings are exclusively designed for grown-ups. Adult animation is any animation that is designed for mature entertainment. There are a number of reasons that the program, art or movie is considered adult animation. Some reasons are far more obvious than others.

When the makers of South Park originally released the program, many people were up in arms by its content. The argument against the program was that it was appealing to young people but the content was way too mature for children. The makers of South Park found themselves in the position of explaining the difference between children’s cartoons and adult animation.

The mature subject matter in programs like South Park is one of the primary reasons that a show of this type is considered adult animation. Humor that appeals to a mature audience may not be suitable for younger people. Adult humor can easily be offensive and confusing to a child and even though shows like South Park and Family Guy may appear to be appealing to children, they are really inappropriate.

Aside from mature humor, graphic violence may make an animated program fall under the classification of adult animation. Violence is prevalent in many shows of this genre. Of course, a grown-up understands that the program is created by artists, but many children do not really grasp this notion. Graphic violence can be traumatic for young children.

Adult language and swearing is also common in many of the adult animation programs. Even though cable television beeps out the offensive language, the gist of swearing is apparent. Adult animation may also have suggestive images and nudity in some cases.

Some may wonder why on earth developers of racy programs like these would create the characters and settings in an animated style that would normally appeal to children. This approach is part of the humor. Adult animation is ironic in that the characters and events revolve around an immature format. However, the programs are normally aired after most children are fast asleep.

It is important to remember that adult animation is only harmful to children if the children are exposed to them. Parental supervision is crucial with such programs at the tips of our remote controls. It is important that parents know what their children are watching especially when the program airs after nine o’clock at night. This is common sense.

How To Find A Baby Sitter You Can Trust

Most parents need a baby sitter from time to time to provide care while they work or to just simply give them a break once in awhile. Being a parent can be very demanding and finding a baby sitter that is trustworthy and dependable helps to ease the stress associated with child care issues.

As all parents know, child care is a necessity at times. It is not always possible to take off from work every time your child has a sniffle and can’t go to school. On the other hand, a parent that is home full time needs a break as well, to rejuvenate physically and psychologically.

Since we live in a highly mobile society, parents do not always have family members close by that they can ask to watch the children. So who do you turn to, and how do you find a baby sitter you can trust?

A good place to start the search for a baby sitter is to talk to other parents and ask them if they could make a recommendation. Maybe there is a neighbor who could also help out from time to time.

Finding a good baby sitter is not always an easy task, and it shouldn?t be assumed that just because your best friend’s neighbor watches her children, that she is the right one for you. Parents should interview prospective baby sitters and check more than one reference.

Parents also should never expect baby sitters to be a carbon copy of themselves. A good baby sitter should be flexible, kind, conscientious, and have the knowledge and experience to interact appropriately with the children, and know what to do in the case of an emergency.

During the interview, parents should discuss hourly rates and modes of transportation too. If the baby sitter lives next door, then transportation isn’t an issue, but it may be for someone who lives across town and doesn’t drive.

Baby sitters should never be expected or allowed to give medications, only simple first aid for minor bumps and bruises should be administered. Before leaving the baby sitter with the children, she should have all the information necessary, including phone numbers, address, etc. to contact the parents, nearest relative, neighbor, or emergency services if a situation arises.

Parents should also arrange a meeting between the children and the baby sitter before the actual time comes, so that the baby sitter knows what to expect and make the children more comfortable in their parents’ absence.

Other rules should be discussed at this time as well; baby sitters should not be allowed to have friends over or make phone calls unless approved by the parent. They should never answer the door to strangers either, no matter who they claim to be. The safety and security of the children should be the first priority!

How To Use A Behavior Chart With Your Child

Changing the Behavior of a Pre-School Child

A behavior chart, or behavior modification chart can help you with difficult children in the classroom and in the household. Behavior charts will let you set up a schedule where the child can be disciplined for bad behavior and rewarded for good behavior, resulting in a child who learns to take responsibility for his own actions, instead of acting up.

Because you are using a behavior chart, the child will develop a sense of justice and responsibility, knowing that his or her actions, both good and bad, have very clearly spelled out consequences, and that he or she must learn to take responsibility for the things he or she does.

We used a behavior modification chart for my son Sammy a few years ago. He was entering the toilet training stage, and was having some very serious problems. He would act up and begin to regress when we tried to move him to toilet training, throwing tantrums, using baby talk, and refusing to eat.

The behavior chart was originally a little scary for him, because it appointed him choices, which he hadn’t really experienced before. He was used to having the ability to negotiate when he would do something badly, he could discuss it with us, and often get out of the punishment (although I now see that this was bad parenting.) But using the behavior chart, he now knew that there was no choice. What happened if he acted properly or improperly was clearly spelled out on the behavior chart for him to see.

In the classroom, they also use a behavior chart in Sammy’s school. When the kids are well behaved for the day, they are rewarded. If they complete their assignments well and on time, and if they help the other students and participate in classroom discussions, they are also rewarded according to the behavior chart on the wall.

The rewards are points which they can spend in a token economy on various treats. This token economy works both individually and on a group level. Individually, they can get extra recess, treats, or the right to use the best toys. As a group, when the class accumulates enough points, they get a pizza party, the star prize on the behavior chart.

It worked so well, that now behavior charts are used in almost every classroom in the school to encourage both good behavior and teamwork among the kids.
