How Parents Can Win the Battle To Keep Your Child Safe From Strangers This Holiday Season

When we think of Holiday shopping, we think of all the glowing lights at our area malls and the various eye-catching decorations in shopping centers. Along with distractions with our ‘to do’ list in our heads, we get preoccupied with carrying bags and scoping out gifts. But with all the whirlwinds of diversions, we cannot put our guard down with who is scoping out our own children.

To help with this here are the top 7 things parents can do to prevent their young from falling prey to strangers and child kidnappers in the busy hustle and bustle of the season.

1. Stay connected. Make sure you have your children with you whether in a stroller or holding your hand. Even if your child stays next to you other times of the year, all the distractions of toys, decorations, and Santa can make any kid get sidetracked. For older children invest in a family walkie-talkie set. Make sure they know how to use it and check in with them on regular time intervals to know where they are – even if they are right next to you.

Tip! It teaches life skills. My child can prepare his own breakfast, load the dishes into the dishwasher, and then clear the table and floor when he is done.

2. If your child is lost go right to security. Most malls and shopping centers have security protocol when a child is missing. Don’t try to look for your child alone. Let them help you the second you realize you cannot find your child – every moment counts.

3. Know what your child is wearing that day, and carry a recent picture with you in your wallet. Most moms and dads have lots of pictures of the kids, but baby pics are not helpful if your child is lost and security needs to search for them.

4. Teach your child what to do if a stranger approaches them. First – Run away! Second – Tell somebody!

5. Role play with your child ahead of time. Use tactics that some kidnappers have used in the past and teach your children not to ‘fall for a stranger’s sneaky tricks!’ i.e. stranger favorite lures: candy, video games, comic books, toys, telling them “your mommy told me to bring you home” etc.

Tip! The more your child hears sounds, the better he/she will process these sounds into words. When a child is preschool/kindergarten age the listening word starts to become the written word.

6. Do not have your child wear anything with their name on it – i.e. back packs, purses, and jackets. Child offenders with pick up these clues and use the child’s name when speaking with them to gain trust.

How to Choose the Best Highchair for your Baby or Child

Check that there’s a good secure harness or seat strap to keep your baby firmly attached in the high chair. There should be a sturdy, but comfortable, strap that attaches to the waist belt and then passes through baby’s legs, so they don’t slide down under the feeding tray. If possible look for one that has a fixed 5-point harness, as that will be the safest. Many babies and children are actually injured when the baby has not been correctly restrained, and baby has fallen out.

Tip! Prepare your child for the commonsense consequence?Give your children fair warning, but only once. Respectfully tell them what you have decided to do, but don’t remind them every five minutes.

When children live in more than one household it takes good communications to keep up with what they are doing.  Divorced parents need to be aware of what the children are allowed to do and access in each other’s homes.

This can be accomplished through direct communication.  A huge mistake that many divorced parents make is trying to communicate through the children. This is wrong for several reasons. The main reason is that it places the children in the middle. It also pressures a child to be able to deliver a message word for word, which studies have shown most adults cannot do. 

Another reason why trying to communication through the children is ineffective is that it allows room for the child to manipulate the messages, which can result in misdirected anger.  Most people do not like the role of playing messenger between two people.  The messenger is often in the position of being exposed to the person’s reaction to the message. 

Divorced parents forget that most time the children want to be left out of the emotional baggage that may exist between them. The children need to feel that they are permitted to love both of their parents. Having to hear responses about messages they are delivering may make this difficult.

If divorced parents are able to agree to put their differences aside when they are dealing with parenting issues, things can run much smoother. If the children know that their divorced parents are openly communicating about the activities of the children, they will feel more secure. This will also greatly decrease the ability of the children to manipulate their divorced parents.

Studies have shown that children crave having a set routine. It is comforting for them to know what is in store for them, especially during the school year, when they are also faced with learning and peer issues. When people think of animation, they usually think of children. However, many cartoons and drawings are exclusively designed for grown-ups. Adult animation is any animation that is designed for mature entertainment. There are a number of reasons that the program, art or movie is considered adult animation. Some reasons are far more obvious than others.

When the makers of South Park originally released the program, many people were up in arms by its content. The argument against the program was that it was appealing to young people but the content was way too mature for children. The makers of South Park found themselves in the position of explaining the difference between children’s cartoons and adult animation.

The mature subject matter in programs like South Park is one of the primary reasons that a show of this type is considered adult animation. Humor that appeals to a mature audience may not be suitable for younger people. Adult humor can easily be offensive and confusing to a child and even though shows like South Park and Family Guy may appear to be appealing to children, they are really inappropriate.

Aside from mature humor, graphic violence may make an animated program fall under the classification of adult animation. Violence is prevalent in many shows of this genre. Of course, a grown-up understands that the program is created by artists, but many children do not really grasp this notion. Graphic violence can be traumatic for young children.

Adult language and swearing is also common in many of the adult animation programs. Even though cable television beeps out the offensive language, the gist of swearing is apparent. Adult animation may also have suggestive images and nudity in some cases.

Some may wonder why on earth developers of racy programs like these would create the characters and settings in an animated style that would normally appeal to children. This approach is part of the humor. Adult animation is ironic in that the characters and events revolve around an immature format. However, the programs are normally aired after most children are fast asleep.

It is important to remember that adult animation is only harmful to children if the children are exposed to them. How To Use A Behavior Chart With Your Child

Changing the Behavior of a Pre-School Child

A behavior chart, or behavior modification chart can help you with difficult children in the classroom and in the household. Behavior charts will let you set up a schedule where the child can be disciplined for bad behavior and rewarded for good behavior, resulting in a child who learns to take responsibility for his own actions, instead of acting up.

Because you are using a behavior chart, the child will develop a sense of justice and responsibility, knowing that his or her actions, both good and bad, have very clearly spelled out consequences, and that he or she must learn to take responsibility for the things he or she does.

We used a behavior modification chart for my son Sammy a few years ago. He was entering the toilet training stage, and was having some very serious problems. He would act up and begin to regress when we tried to move him to toilet training, throwing tantrums, using baby talk, and refusing to eat.

The behavior chart was originally a little scary for him, because it appointed him choices, which he hadn’t really experienced before. He was used to having the ability to negotiate when he would do something badly, he could discuss it with us, and often get out of the punishment (although I now see that this was bad parenting.) But using the behavior chart, he now knew that there was no choice. What happened if he acted properly or improperly was clearly spelled out on the behavior chart for him to see.

In the classroom, they also use a behavior chart in Sammy’s school. When the kids are well behaved for the day, they are rewarded. If they complete their assignments well and on time, and if they help the other students and participate in classroom discussions, they are also rewarded according to the behavior chart on the wall.

The rewards are points which they can spend in a token economy on various treats. This token economy works both individually and on a group level. Individually, they can get extra recess, treats, or the right to use the best toys. As a group, when the class accumulates enough points, they get a pizza party, the star prize on the behavior chart.

It worked so well, that now behavior charts are used in almost every classroom in the school to encourage both good behavior and teamwork among the kids.
