How To Throw A Fun Halloween Party

Tip! TRICK Celebration of Halloween came to America with early Irish and Scottish immigrants. The belief in spirit possession had subsided compared to the early days and the act of dressing as ghouls, goblins, ghosts and witches was more like today’s ceremonious fun.

Halloween is a BOOtefull excuse for throwing a party, and you don’t have to live in Transylvania to pull it off. All you need is some imagination plus a reasonable food and festivities budget.

Of course, it goes without saying that a Halloween party is a costume party. Anything less wouldn’t be Halloween.

You’ll get your best results if you pick a Halloween costume theme and then ask guests to come in the appropriate type of costume. You can choose famous Grade B movie ghouls, or characters from any of the teenage death movies that are always popular. Or, you can go back to the more traditional Halloween roots and have a Celtic theme. It’s your party so you get do decide.

Be sure to put the word out that that anyone arriving without a costume has to parade around in their underwear all night wearing a dunce cap. THAT ought to get everyone thinking about what they’re going to wear. Be sure to send your invitations out by the first week of October because Halloween is a major party season and you don’t want someone else’s party competing with yours.

Tip! HAPPY HALLOWEEN Of all the mainstay holidays that populate our year, Halloween is one of the oldest, dating back thousands of years. Thanksgiving, 4th of July, Easter and even Christmas are youngsters by comparison.

Decorating Tips

If you want to go all out, follow the tips in our How to Create Your Own Haunted House article, or just build upon these great ideas:

1.  Decorate the main party room with artificial spider webs, or let the real ones build up all year long.

2.  Replace your normal light bulbs with colored ones. You can usually find orange bulbs in the home centers but you’ll almost surely find them in the party stores as Halloween approaches.

3.  Drape the traditional black and orange cr갥 paper from the ceilings and door frames and hang up some of those fake spiders and bats for added effect.

Tip! If you know or suspect your pet has eaten some Halloween candy contact your veterinarian IMMEDIATELY. Some candies, especially chocolate, can be life threatening.

4.  Cover the tables with black shower curtains or pick up some Halloween tablecloths while you’re out getting the light bulbs. Don’t forget to sprinkle the tables with Halloween party confetti and plastic cockroaches.

5.  If you can find some of those life-like fake rats, grab a few and put them in wonderful places like inside the refrigerator. Put one in your bathroom medicine cabinet and when you hear screams you’ll know that you’ve caught a snooper.

Tip! Accidental falls is the number one cause of injuries on Halloween night (National Safety Council).

6.  Carve a big jack-o-lantern as a centerpiece. Black flowers (real or artificial) look great in black cat vases.

7.  Follow our tips in the our How to Create Your Own Scary Sound Effects and Halloween Sound Track article, or cheat and just go buy one. Either way, make sure that you’re spinnin’ some gruesome tunes when your guests arrive.

Food Tips

Snack foods go well with Halloween parties. People aren’t expecting a sit-down meal, but you should have more available than chips and dips. Buffalo wings are always a hit and, if you want to be dull and boring, you can always order pizza. But why not make some scary looking Halloween specialties that have the look that screams Halloween? I’m no cook, so I’m going to leave this part to the experts.

Tip! Get in Their Face — Halloween was made for pretend. Kids love to make faces, don costumes and assume a new personality.

Entertainment Ideas

Scary soundtracks will only get you so far, so make sure that you have a good mix of party and dancing music available. Get copies of some of the Halloween classics like Toccata and Fugue in D Minor, which is the classic Halloween organ music. You’ll recognize it as soon as you hear it. Monster Mash, Pumpkin Head Harvey, Somethin’ in the Swamp, In Salem Town, and, of course, Ghostbusters are fun to mix in during the evening.

Tip! Stop Posing — Halloween is not a formal affair. So don’t bother with the wedding style shots.

Have a costume judging event with plenty of prizes. Winning categories can include: Best Costume, Worst Costume, Scariest, Sexiest, and Nicest Underwear (male and female) for those who arrived sans costume.

Remember this one rule when throwing a Halloween Party: There are No Rules, so enjoy!

How To Settle Down To Watch Some Ghostly Haunted House Movies This Halloween

Tip! TRICK Celebration of Halloween came to America with early Irish and Scottish immigrants. The belief in spirit possession had subsided compared to the early days and the act of dressing as ghouls, goblins, ghosts and witches was more like today’s ceremonious fun.

Ghosts, goblins and other creepy creatures roam the eve of Halloween. From trick or treaters to Halloween parties, October is the month when children and adults transform themselves into other-wordly beings. But not everyone enjoys going out during this autumn holiday. Some people enjoy turning the lights down low and passing the time watching mystery and horror flicks in front of the TV. So to set the mood, here are some Halloween movie rental ideas featuring haunted houses for those that prefer a good ghost-like mystery rather than a continuous stream of blood and gore.

Tip! View few Free Halloween Ecards. Look at the colors.

The Haunting (1963) – A true classic horror film. Here we find four guests arriving at a mansion with a terrifying reputation. The guests are determined to debunk the idea of a house being possessed and so set up for the night. Strange occurrences soon make themselves known from muffled wails to strange unexplainable noises. The guests encounter a door that appears to breathe, unexplained writing on the walls and many other supernatural phenomena. A new remake of the film is also available (The Haunting (1999)).

Haunted (1996) – Nanny Tess Webb (Anna Masey) has been seeing visions. Her three children, as well as the family doctor all insist that there is no haunting and that she is just hallucinating. She invites Professor David Ash (Aidan Quinn), who is skeptic of the supernatural, to investigate the paranormal goings-on at her country estate. After spending some time there himself, the Professor also begins to experience unexplainable visions, including the vision of his young sister who died in a drowning accident.

Tip! Get in Their Face — Halloween was made for pretend. Kids love to make faces, don costumes and assume a new personality.

Haunted Castle (3-D) (2001) – After his mother dies, a young musician named Johnny is summoned to his mother’s castle according to the final wishes in her will. He soon discovers that not all seems as it appears and that the castle is not only haunted by ghosts, it appears to be alive. He is eventually lead to a Mr. D who makes Johnny the same tantalizing offer that he made his mother twenty years earlier? surrender your soul in exchange for fame and fortune.

The Others (2001) – Starring Nicole Kidman as Grace, this is one of those few, rare movies that will keep you guessing until the end. The story is set in 1945 toward the end of the war. Living on a fog-enshrouded island off the British coast we find that Grace’s husband has presumably been lost in the war and she is living on her own with her two young children. The children are hypersensitive to light and so live in a musty manor with the curtains and shutters perpetually drawn closed. Needing some assistance, Grace writes up a request for domestic help, but before she can go to town to post it, three strangers suddenly arrive in response to her as yet un-posted request. This film will certainly leave you guessing with its twists and turns.

Tip! HALLOW’S EVE The word Halloween is a concoction. Samhain (pronounced sow-en, the sow rhymes with cow, that ‘en’ part is important to remember) was combined with the November 1st Catholic holiday of ‘All Hallows Eve’, otherwise known as ‘All Hallows Day ‘or ‘All Saints Day’.

Stephen King’s Rose Red (2002) – Another true story haunting and originally a mini-series, this movie is based on a researcher investigating the paranormal who takes a team of psychics into a haunted house. We soon learn of the building’s gruesome past – women who have disappeared without any trace and men meeting gruesome deaths. Soon after entering, the psychics themselves begin to experience many paranormal activities, including disappearing team members.

How To Make Non-Traditional Halloween Gift Baskets

If you are considering something different for the holidays of fall then you may want to consider Halloween gift baskets this year. These festive arrangements can be bought already assembled or you can make your own. This unique craft will be a hit with kids of all ages.

Many people immediately think that a Halloween gift basket would be a huge arrangement. This kind of item is commonly used for presents and special occasions. However, Halloween gift baskets can come in all sorts of sizes. You can make tiny ones for visiting neighborhood children or you can make that big display for a special family.

One family I have become very close to over the years does not celebrate the Halloween holiday. Instead, the family spends time playing games or they may go out to a movie instead. As the children became more and more aware of the festivities that they were missing I decided to make them Halloween gift baskets.

This project had to be approached very carefully because of the parents’ opposition to many of the themes of the Halloween holiday. Instead of constructing Halloween gift baskets in black and orange I decided to use red and white. I chose these colors for a specific theme.

Instead of making formal Halloween gift baskets, I made night out at the movies baskets. The items I chose included popcorn balls arranged in movie theatre popcorn holders. I added some of their favorite sodas as well as other movie theater treats. Under all of the treats were nice, comfortable fall pajamas for each of the girls.

The girls were thrilled with the night out at the movies theme and they seemed to forget all about missing dress up for the holiday when they found their pajamas. I also made sure to include a fun movie in the Halloween gift baskets as well.

Not everyone celebrates every holiday. I have made many Halloween gift baskets over the years of all shapes and sizes. The night at the movies baskets were just as fun to make and I had a great opportunity to share a little bit of holiday spirit without celebrating the actual holiday.

The other kids in the neighborhood did receive traditional Halloween gift baskets filled with spooky treats and they were thrilled. I was just glad that I could do something a little extra special for my special family as well.

How To Enjoy Halloween Decorating

Not everyone enjoys Halloween, but in my house, it is one of our favorite holidays. I guess it depends on how you look at the holiday, and what it means to you and your family.

To us, it is a time to enjoy dressing up, and having fun together. One of the best parts of this day for us is the Halloween decorating. There is something about spiders and other spooky things that make this fun. Normally, you don’t want a spider in your home, especially a big one, but for Halloween decorating, large scary spiders are a must.

When it comes to Halloween decorating, there are many different ways to go. I love to see homes where people take their Halloween decorating very seriously. They have elaborate setups in their yards, and you almost want to get out of your car so you can investigate.

I have seen elaborate Halloween decorating schemes that include a graveyard, dead trees, sound effects, and even a fog produced by fog machine. Incredible!

These people might also have loads of spider web and flashing lights to complete the scene. These houses, coincidentally, are the best places to take your kids when you are out for trick or treat. Not only do they take their Halloween decorating seriously, they put a lot of thought into the treats they give out.

There are also folks that take their Halloween decorating ideas indoors. They don’t stop with simple decorations; they turn their home into a haunted house. This is a lot of work, but they must enjoy it completely, otherwise, why bother?

These people enjoy decorating just for the trick or treaters that may come by. This isn’t as common as it used to be, because many parents won’t allow their children to go into a stranger’s home, and this is probably for the best. It always takes a few loons to spoil it for everyone else.

If you are really into Halloween decorating, you can find almost anything you can imagine. What you get is only limited by your budget. You can look in local specialty shops for great and interesting objects, or you can do a search online.

If you look online, you are going to find things you never imagined. You can find stuff from all over the world to complete your Halloween decorating scheme, as well as the tried and true classics that you may have grown up with. No matter what you may dream up; you can find it out there somewhere.

How To Celebrate With Scary Halloween Books

There are many clever ways to “celebrate” Halloween.  As twenty-somethings my friends and I would do the costume thing, Halloween foods and drinks, etc.  We would also pull out what we considered Halloween books and take turns reading to the group in the side room interested in good literature or just in being titillated or scared.

The best of a Halloween books collection of course starts with Edgar Allen Poe’s works, the short stories of horror and depravity that still have the power to move these two centuries later….  My favorite shorts were “The Fall of the House of Usher” and “The Masque of the Red Death,” the first for its haunted house (Halloween books and stories) feel, the second for its appeal at a Halloween party in a house with a bunch of rooms wherein one imagines one is trapped, with other people, for days and nights.

Also more terrifying—if you don’t want Halloween books, per se, but just want to get into a metaphysical, parapsychological, the cosmic, the occult genre, real people haunted by real ghosts and other phenomena, true scary stories mood—are the following for teens and adults:

Amityville Horror, by Jay Anson – This book is creepy from the cover, with a photo of the actual house, which looks alive with the windows and doors giving the illusion of a face.  The book is based on the true story/events, of a man who killed his family and of the new man and family who moved in and became possessed…to emulate the former house inhabitants.  One of the best Halloween books ever.  The first that comes to mind when I hear or read the phrase “scary books” or “Halloween books,” in other words.

The Shining – A number of Steven King books scare the pee out of you, but for me this one is frightening because it is realistic enough to be psychologically terrifying.  The possibility of a writer with cabin fever, staying in a shut-down hotel in the woods of New England in blizzard-snow storms and black outs, with ghosts of hotel parties past…..

The Mephisto Waltz – I am still trying to find a copy of this, so I can tell you the author, for starters…but there are scenes in this creepy story where the guard dogs, Doberman Pinschers, track the protagonist in the most eerie and terrifying of ways, whenever she tries to get out….  Oh, just found the author’s name: Fred Mustard Steward.

Of course, there are numerous “kid friendly” Halloween books for kids, but I focused here on the Halloween books for adults, as we get to have a little thrill, too.  And The Happy Pumpkins didn’t seem like a title that would do much for anyone, anyway.
