How To Choose A Security System With A Motion Detector

If you are looking for a home security system, you have many types and options from which to choose. Systems can be very simple for those who live in a relatively safe area, while others are more complicated.

If you own a business, no matter where you are located, you most assuredly want to get the best system that money can buy. This might include not only sensors on all entry points and windows, but a motion detector or two as well. These are quite often included in some security packages, but in some cases, you may have to ask for them.

A building is more secure when it has a motion detector included in its security system.  These can tell your security company when someone is walking around inside your home or business when it should be empty.

Thieves have become good about bypassing other security measures, but may have a hard time getting around a motion detector. That is why many new systems offer them as part of the package deal. A good motion detector will go off when an intruder has entered a private area.

The problem with them is that some are too sensitive for practical uses. In some cases, sunlight moving across a floor, or dust moving around due to a gust of air will set it off. When this happens, police or fire personnel may be dispatched for no good reason. You may then be facing a fee for the emergency service.

You have to ask some questions when deciding on which motion detector you would like to have for your security system. There may be reasons why a highly sensitive model will not work for you. On the other hand, you don’t want a model that will let people slip in and out of your home or business without alerting someone. If you have pets, you may not be able to have a motion detector in your home at all.

When signing up for a security system for your home or business, ask about motion detectors if they are not offered initially. There are times when a good security system will save you money on your home insurance, and the better your system, the safer you and your family will be. Just remember to discuss all of your options before you decide, and if a motion detector is what you want, make sure you get it.

How To Choose Kitchen Remodeling Plans

Kitchens are where many families gather and touch base after a trying day. Many times it’s the room where you and your family spends the most time. If this is true for your family why not make it more homey and comfortable? You can do that with kitchen remodeling plans.

The first thing you’ll want to consider is how large is your kitchen. Are you using every inch of your available space to the best of its ability? Is your kitchen easy to keep clean? Is your kitchen well organized? Are you able to find whatever you need efficiently? Family members will be much more comfortable in your kitchen if it is clean and well organized.

Sometimes the best first step is to reconsider how you are using the available space. Many home improvement stores have an aisle completely devoted to storage issues. If you factor organization into your kitchen remodeling plans you’ll be happier with the end result. After all, who wants a pretty new looking kitchen that you still can’t find what you’re looking for? The best kitchen remodeling plans involve deciding how to organize the space.

While you’re considering organization issues, why not consider investing in a pot and pan rack that can be hung from the ceiling or wall close to your oven or stove? This is the kind of improvement that would really pay off in the long run for kitchen remodeling plans. Not only will this have a professional look, but also you will be able to simply reach for the item you want in front of you.

Is flooring a part of the vision of your new kitchen? If it is, decide before you go to the store what type of flooring you need and want. Your best bet is to find something that looks attractive at a reasonable price and is easy to clean. For this reason you may want to steer clear of carpeting for your kitchen remodeling plans. All it would take is one spilled bowl of cake batter to ruin your investment. Even if you clean the carpet right way, you’ll still have residual stains and bacteria in the floor. Would you want a baby crawling across that? Stick with tiles or linoleum. This way any messes can be easily mopped up and disinfected.

Are you considering new appliances? Again, you need to consider cleaning, ease of use, and how they will fit in your kitchen remodeling plans. For this reason, you may want to stay away from appliances with gray metal fronts. They may look wonderful in the store but when you get them home they will pick up every grubby fingerprint smear. You’ll spend a considerable amount of time constantly cleaning these appliances.

If you follow at least some of these rules, you’ll be able to follow through with your kitchen remodeling plans in a practical and economical manor.

How To Choose A Home Security Alarm

If you want to ensure the safety of your family and your home you should consider installing a security alarm. Many people all over the country pay hundreds and thousands of dollars to install a top of the line security alarm system in their homes, cars and businesses.

In this day and age, however, are security alarms really all they were meant to be? We live in a society that often hears the security alarm but then looks the other way. Have we, as a national community, really become complacent when it comes to personal safety?

When these alarms were first developed, they were pretty crude, compared to the models of today. Manually operated, security alarm systems of ole were set off by some guy with a ball peen hammer, to let the village know that there was danger on the way. Today’s security alarm systems are laser-guided and even motion activated.

The biggest problem with these systems isn?t the alarm itself, but more to do with a society that is used to hearing them sound off! According to Brinks Home Security, one the nations largest home security suppliers, it just doesn’t pay any more to have the simple security alarm that sets of a series of sounds.

Take for instance, a busy downtown mall parking lot: how many times have you heard an alarm in a car going off and only casually glanced around? It happens every day and it happens with a home security alarm even more often. In the 1970′s and 80′s people also knew their neighbors so when the home security alarm sounded, the neighbors called the police. Today, the average suburbanite doesn’t even know their neighbor.

A homeowner has little choice but to choose a design that hooks up directly to local law enforcement or to a security company. It needs to be sophisticated enough to call the local police in the event the security alarm sounds. In a day and age when the average person is busy whisking off here or there, people rarely stop to even notice an alarm that is sounding.

Many of today’s systems come already equipped to either call the police or the actual alarm company. The security alarm still sounds, some thing that still has been proven to scare some would be thieves away, however today’s alarm systems also call for help. So go ahead and install that security system. Just make certain that the one you choose makes that back up call as well.

How To Reduce Your Kitchen Remodeling Costs

Everything and the Kitchen Sink: Remodel Your Kitchen without Losing Your Mind

Have you lived for years with a kitchen that has never really worked well for your purposes?

Unfortunately when you purchase a home or rent an apartment the kitchen may not be exactly what you had in mind.

Kitchen remodeling costs are not inexpensive. However, when you consider the fact that a remodeled kitchen will increase a home’s resale value, updating may pay off in the long run.

One of the cheapest ways to keep your kitchen remodeling costs down is to start with the cheapest improvements first. Before you spend any money step back and take a good look at your kitchen. Are you making the best use of you kitchen storage?

Perhaps all you need to keep kitchen remodeling costs down is to make better use of the space you have. Many kitchens have been given a makeover simply by reorganizing spaces in way that works better for the people who cook in it.

You can keep kitchen remodeling costs down by going to your local home improvement store and seeing what they have to help you organize your kitchen. This will still cost some money but it is certainly cheaper than a full-blown kitchen modeling project.

Take a good look at your kitchen walls. Is the shade of paint or the wall paper on the walls circa 1980? You?d be surprised how your long ignored walls may make your kitchen look a little dated. Sometimes all a kitchen needs is a fresh coat of paint or new wallpaper to look brand new.

Are your floors looking a little shabby? It is now possible to purchase linoleum and tiles from a local home improvement store and place them on your floors yourself. A home improvement store employee can be most helpful in explaining what needs to be done and what needs to be purchased to do the job correctly. If you can do minor improvements yourself, you can really cut down on your kitchen remodeling costs.

Is your refrigerator not as cold as it used to be? You may think you need a newer model but sometimes all you need to do is to clean the coils on the back of the refrigerator and the vents underneath the model to restore it’s artic cool. Why pay for a new refrigerator when you can keep kitchen remodeling costs down by making a few adjustments to the model you already have?

If you have tried all the quick fixes you can think of and that refrigerator, stove, or freezer is just worn out perhaps purchasing a newer model is a good idea. If you need to purchase new appliances, you can still keep kitchen remodeling costs down by selecting energy efficient products such as Energy Star. This way your newer kitchen appliances are less likely to tax your electric or gas bill.

You don’t always have to spend large amounts of money to improve your kitchen. Sometimes small improvements and do it yourself projects are all you need.

How To Build A Shed

There are many resources that can tell you how to build a shed, and make it pretty easy for you as well.

As a matter of fact, because they are such simple structures, learning how to build a shed can be great preparation for your next project, teaching you a lot of valuable construction skills, and allowing you to make mistakes on a part of your house that does not need to look fabulous, just functional.

Think about it, if you have a hole in the wall of your shed, or a place where the sides do not meet exactly, you can always patch, fix, or jury rig a solution. Would you want to do that in your living room? Of course not. That is why building a shed is such a great first project.

A lot of people think that building a shed is a difficult project, but they are really overestimating it. Although it is possible to buy a shed (and this might be an option if you are not an experienced builder and want something that looks really finished) building a shed should pose you no problem provided that you have the right tools and the right attitude.

Of course, before you can really learn how to build a shed, you need to know basic things about working with wood. A woodworking class might be a good idea to teach you these necessary idea.

An easier way to do it is to have a friend who already knows about building show you. If you can bribe him or her to help you learn how to build a shed from the get go, or even to take over the project for you and let you help him or her instead of the other way around, then you will be in an excellent position to learn the needed skills.

Learning in a class is great, but in my opinion the best way to learn is by doing. Learning how to build a shed is definitely no exception to this rule. If you get a chance to see all of the techniques applied, it will be so much easier for you to pick up all of the knowledge that you need to.

You will be a master of construction in no time and then, who knows - you might build a screened in porch, or a deck, or even build your own fireplace next. The sky is the limit!

How To Build A Porch

It has always been my dream to build a porch. I must admit, when I started looking at how to build a screened in porch, and realizing how difficult it all was, I did consider hiring a contractor for a moment.

It would be so easy to, instead of learning step by step this difficult new skill, give the job over to someone more qualified, someone who knows already how to build a porch.

Major home renovation is intimidating, especially if you happen to be someone like me, someone who has barely even lifted a saw in his life, let alone done a major construction job like building a porch. How could I learn how to build a porch? I barely knew how to saw the wood.

I was saved by my friend Joe. Joe is what you might call a man’s man. He loves tools, football, beer, and anything macho like that. With him, it is practically a matter of pride to know things like how to build a porch. Whatever he did not know, he knew where to look, and quickly he took over the project.

He would come over almost everyday after work got out to work on the project, I would buy us a case of beer, and we would get to work, slowly burning the evening away, sawing and hammering until the sun went down.

To be honest, he later told me, he did not know anything about how to build a porch in the first place, but he had done enough home projects to be able to figure it out without too much effort.

When I look at the results of his project, it is pretty clear that he made good on his promise to help me no matter what it took. The porch looks wonderful.

How To Choose Accent Lighting

When it comes to home remodeling, the importance of detail is often overlooked. But it is the details that bring your individual style and personality to the project. One of the most inexpensive ways to enhance a room is by using light to transform the space. A small detail like accent lighting can be just as important as the floor plan to the look of the room when the final product is finished.

There are many choices in accent lighting from table lamps and floor lamps to track lighting and in-wall or in-ceiling fixtures. When decorating your home, lighting should never be overlooked or considered an insignificant detail. Light can make the difference between a cold room and a warm room, and the accent lighting you choose will go beyond function and set the tone you want to establish in your home.

The first step is to survey the room and look for any dark corners or shadowy areas. Choosing the right accent lighting can be as simple as finding the perfect lamp for a table in a far corner of the room that is not reached by the room’s larger lighting fixtures. Next you want to make sure that the accent lighting you choose for a room will be functional and not interfere with the flow of the room. This means no stray cords in the middle of the floor or placing lamps where they could be knocked over. A few years ago there were a series of halogen lamps on the market that became too hot even started fires when they were placed too close to walls and ceilings. You should always keep safety in mind when choosing appropriate lighting for your home.

Installing small lights under the cabinets in the kitchen is a good way to provide accent lighting along the countertop without the hassle and clutter of cords and wires from lamps. Because the kitchen is used to prepare food, you want the accent lighting in this room to be as unobtrusive as possible. Another place where accent lighting should be functional is the bathroom. Selecting a decorative but functional track light over the sink or a set of two separate wall fixtures on either side can enhance the appearance of the room without interfering with the purpose of the room.

If you have a piece of artwork that is particularly spectacular, you can order special accent lighting that will highlight the piece. Rather than getting lost on the wall, the art will stand out and serve as a main focal point in the room. And even if your art is nothing special, the right accent lighting can turn a simple picture into a work of art, creating depth in the piece that would otherwise go unnoticed.
